Protean (NSDL) wants a 3.5 × 2.5 cm photo under 20 KB and a 2 × 4.5 cm signature under 10 KB, at 200 DPI. UTIITSL allows 30 KB and 60 KB.

How it works

Protean (NSDL) wants a 3.5 × 2.5 cm photo under 20 KB and a 2 × 4.5 cm signature under 10 KB, at 200 DPI. UTIITSL allows 30 KB and 60 KB.

The two PAN agencies have different limits. On Protean (formerly NSDL), Form 49A with digital signing asks for a colour photograph of 3.5 × 2.5 cm at 200 DPI, JPG, under 20 KB, and a signature of 2 × 4.5 cm at 200 DPI, under 10 KB, in black ink on white paper; the eSign route allows 50 KB for each, so the stricter limits work for both. UTIITSL's form checks only the file size: the photo must be under 30 KB and the signature under 60 KB. 10 KB is tight for a signature, which is where cleaning up the paper helps: a white background compresses far better than grey paper. Pick Protean or UTIITSL and both files are made to fit.
