# Strip EXIF metadata from a photo

> Remove the hidden metadata in a photo (camera model, GPS location, capture timestamp, lens info) by re-encoding it through a canvas.

Remove metadata, GPS, and camera info. Free, no signup. Runs entirely in your browser; files are never uploaded.

## How it works

Every photo from a phone or camera carries an EXIF block: GPS coordinates, exact capture time, device make and model, lens, ISO, even the orientation and the editing software used. Sharing a photo with EXIF intact leaks your location and habits. This tool decodes the image to a canvas, then re-encodes it as JPEG at 95 quality. Canvas re-encoding cannot preserve EXIF, so every byte of metadata is dropped, including GPS. The visible photo is identical to the eye, just with a clean slate. Useful before posting screenshots or photos publicly. Output filename has -clean.jpg appended. For batch processing or for keeping the original format, use Convert image (which also strips metadata via the same canvas path).

## How to use it

1. **Drop your photo.** Phone photos carry GPS, device, and timestamp data you may not want public.
2. **Strip the metadata.** The image is decoded to a canvas and re-encoded — every EXIF byte, including GPS, is dropped.
3. **Download the clean copy.** The -clean.jpg downloads at 95 quality, visually identical to the original.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does this remove GPS from my photo?

Yes. All EXIF data, including GPS coordinates, is stripped because the image is decoded and re-encoded without it.

### Will the photo quality drop?

Minimal. The output is JPEG at 95 quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original in normal viewing.

### Does this work on PNG?

Yes, but the output is JPEG. PNG metadata (tEXt, iTXt chunks) is also stripped because of the canvas round-trip.

### Is my photo uploaded?

No. The strip happens in a canvas in your browser.
