# Remove metadata from a PDF

> Clear the title, author, subject, keywords, producer, and creator fields so the PDF doesn't leak who made it or what it was originally called.

Open the tool: https://yourbrowsercandoit.com/metadata-remover

Strip hidden metadata (author, title, dates) from a PDF. Free, no signup. Runs entirely in your browser; files are never uploaded.

## How it works

PDFs carry a metadata dictionary that often contains the original author, the editing software, the creation date, and embedded keywords. This is set automatically by Word, Acrobat, LibreOffice, and most other PDF producers, often without the user noticing. The tool clears all of those fields: title, author, subject, keywords (emptied), producer, and creator. The page content is preserved at full quality, only the metadata is rewritten. Useful before sharing a PDF publicly (whistleblowing, journalism, simple privacy hygiene). What it doesn't strip: per-page metadata like XMP packets inside individual images, font names, or watermarks already drawn into the page content. For those, you'd need to compress (raster-rebuild) or redact. Output filename has -clean appended.

## How to use it

1. **Drop your PDF.** Drag in the PDF you're about to share.
2. **Clean the metadata.** Hit Clean — title, author, subject, keywords, producer, and creator are all emptied locally.
3. **Download.** The -clean PDF downloads with the page content untouched at full quality.

## Frequently asked questions

### What metadata does this remove?

Title, author, subject, keywords, producer, and creator from the PDF info dictionary. The page count and content stay untouched.

### Does this strip metadata from embedded images?

No. EXIF inside embedded images is not removed. If you need fully clean images, strip them before adding to the PDF.

### Is the timestamp removed?

Creation and modification timestamps are not explicitly written by this tool. The default pdf-lib save preserves them unless explicitly overridden.

### Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The metadata strip happens locally via pdf-lib.
