# Mask ID numbers before you share > Drop a photo, scan, or PDF of your Aadhaar, PAN card, bank card, or passbook. Runs entirely in your browser; files are never uploaded. ## How it works Landlords, employers, gyms, SIM shops and hotels ask for copies of ID all the time, and the usual answer is to upload it to some website to crop or mask it, which hands your full Aadhaar or PAN to a server you know nothing about. Here the text is read by an OCR engine (Tesseract) running in your browser tab, and the file never leaves your device. It looks for 12-digit Aadhaar numbers (checked with Aadhaar's Verhoeff checksum) and covers the first 8 digits, 16-digit Virtual IDs (covered fully), PAN (covered fully), card numbers that pass the Luhn check (all but the last 4), and labelled bank account numbers (all but the last 4). You can also cover phone numbers, emails and UPI IDs. The QR code on an Aadhaar card holds your full number, name, address, date of birth and photo: in Chrome on Android and Mac one tap covers it, elsewhere drag a box over it. Boxes are solid, never blurred, and the result is a new image (or a new image-only PDF), so nothing underneath can be recovered and photo metadata such as location is dropped. For password-protected e-Aadhaar PDFs, enter the password on the page; it stays there. Limits, plainly: automatic detection misses things. Tilted, blurry or glare-covered photos, embossed card digits, handwriting and non-English numerals often aren't read. It doesn't find names, addresses, dates of birth, photos, signatures, CVVs or expiry dates. Always look at the preview, drag boxes over anything it missed, and open the saved file before you send it. If you can, download the official masked Aadhaar from UIDAI instead; this is for when you only have a photo or scan. ## How to use it 1. **Drop your ID.** Add a photo, scan or PDF of your Aadhaar, PAN, card or passbook. It's read on your device. 2. **Check the boxes.** Found numbers are covered automatically. Untick any you want visible, cover the QR code, and drag boxes over anything missed. 3. **Save and verify.** Save the masked copy as a new image or PDF, then open it and check it before you send it. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is my Aadhaar or PAN uploaded anywhere? No. The image is read and masked in your browser. The text-recognition engine downloads once (about 15 MB) from a public CDN and then runs on your device; your file is never sent to it or to us. ### Why does it leave the last 4 Aadhaar digits visible? That's the format UIDAI uses for its official masked Aadhaar, and most people who ask for a copy accept it. If you want the whole number hidden, drag a box over the last 4 digits too. ### Will it always find every number? No. It reads printed text well, but can miss numbers on tilted, blurry or shiny photos, embossed card digits, and anything handwritten. It also doesn't look for names, addresses or dates of birth. Check the preview, add boxes by dragging, and open the saved file before you share it. ### Can someone remove the black boxes? No. The boxes are painted into a new image, which replaces the original pixels. Nothing is blurred or layered, so there is nothing to undo. PDFs are rebuilt as images too, so no hidden text layer survives. ### What about the QR code on my Aadhaar? It contains your full Aadhaar number and demographic details, so cover it.
